How to Craft the Perfect Podcast Intro and Outro
In the world of audio production, your podcast's intro and outro act as the front door and the parting handshake for your audience. Getting these voiceovers right is crucial for setting a professional tone and keeping your listeners engaged long after the episode ends. Whether you're launching a new show or refreshing an existing one, here is a guide to writing voiceovers that work.
The Podcast Intro: Short and Sweet
Your intro is your first impression. It needs to grab the listener's attention immediately and establish what they are about to hear.
Here are the golden rules for a great intro:
Keep it brief: Your intro shouldn't be longer than 20 seconds.
Find your hook: This is where you can be a lot more creative. Give the audience a reason to keep listening.
Cover the basics: Always remember to introduce the host and the name of the show.
Intro Examples in Action:
Example 1: "This is Carly, this is Kris. You're listening to The Launch Pod, where we talk to emerging startups and about all things creative."
Example 2: "Welcome to Your Neighbor Next Door, a conversational podcast about growing the community right outside your door.”
The Podcast Outro: Your Engagement Engine
While the intro is about speed, the outro and credits give you room to breathe. Because the listener has made it to the end of your episode, they are likely much more engaged at this point. For this reason, your outro can comfortably be two or more minutes long.
A highly effective outro should include:
Gratitude: Always thank the listener for tuning in.
Brand reinforcement: State the name of your podcast several times.
Scheduling: Let your audience know exactly when they can expect future episodes.
Calls to Action (CTAs): Ask them to leave a review. You should also include any additional CTAs, such as pointing them to more resources, your website, or social media.
Credits and Sign-off: Give credit where it's due for hosts and production, and wrap up with a memorable ending statement.
Outro Examples in Action:
