How to Choose the Perfect Title for Your Podcast
Coming up with a name for your new show can be one of the most exciting—and challenging—parts of the podcasting journey. A great name acts as a hook to draw in first-time listeners. Before you commit to a title, here is a guide to researching your niche and ensuring your name stands out.
Before Naming Your Podcast
Before brainstorming, you need to understand the landscape of your specific niche. Look at other podcasts in the space, and consider the following:
Evaluate the Competition: Is it a competitive space with a lot of names already taken? Look at other podcasts with similar names or keywords to see what you are up against.
Analyze Keywords: Are there keywords that signal to the listener that your podcast is a part of this space? Conversely, are there keywords missing in the space that leave an opportunity for your podcast's name?
Avoid Confusion: Will your podcast get confused for a different podcast or the wrong space entirely?
Stand Out: Will your name stand out enough, or will it be competing with too many other podcasts?
Naming Guidelines
Once you have a feel for the landscape, use these guidelines to narrow down your options and choose a strong, effective title:
Keep it Brief: Aim for 4-5 words max.
Be Descriptive: The name should describe your content and brand. Action and visceral words work best.
Cut the Clutter: Avoid overused words like 'The', 'Podcast', or 'Show'.
Keep it Clean: Avoid misspellings (unless used in a highly creative way), special characters, and punctuation. Choose something that is easy to type, pronounce, and remember.
Test it Out: Say it out loud. Does it convey the same power and meaning as it does on paper? Research podcasts with similar names to make absolutely sure you will stand out.
Think About Visuals: Is there a good opportunity for creative show art with the name?
Remember: Less is More
When it comes to naming, less is more. Think about what you can already say with your show art, subtitle, brand logo, and show description that doesn't need to be crammed directly into the name.
Ultimately, your content matters more than the name itself. However, a carefully chosen, catchy name will get more first-time listeners in the door. Choose wisely, and you will hook them from day one!
